Gravity Survey
(picture)
The flag stone at the west entrance to the church will
be used as part of a gravity survey that will be carried out in Irelnd in the
autumn.
The survey will bring an Absolute Gravimeter to record
some Absolute values which is something that has not been done before. the OSI
will have a relative gravimeter on site too.
The point at the church will form part of a network of
points which will cover the island of Ireland, there will be approximately 50 in
the Republic and another 10 or so in the North.
The gravity network will improve the heighting network
of Ireland and will also be available to scientific projects which will improve
models for Ireland in areas like weather prediction models and seismic
prediction models. The data will also be available for European models which
would see Ireland included on some of these models also.
It is a new area of study for Ireland and the points
put in will act in a similar manner to the old benchmark network only instead of
levelling the instrumentation will be relative gravimeters.
