Teach an tSolais
Teach an tSolais, or the community centre attached to Saint John's church in Tralee got it's name from when the Big River flowed along Ashe Street by the side of the church. Locally the church was known as Teach an tSolais or House of Light as lights were hanging from the walls of the church to guide people along the footpath so that they did not fall into the river.
In the 18th century major structural alterations were done in the town and one of the works was to cover the river. It still runs outside the church along Ashe Street but now in a culvert under the street.
To keep the tradition alive though the community centre is now known locally as Teach an tSolais.
