Lent and Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a kind of a spiritual New Year, a time to make resolutions, to reconnect a little more with our faith. In the past the focus was very much on abstinence. People fasted and gave up stuff and nice things, they did not go to dances. Getting married in Lent was forbidden in certain places.

In many Christian denominations ashes are made on the foreheads of those attending Ash Wednesday services with the words  Turn away from Sin and be faithful to Christ. This is a reminder and prayer to help us to refocus on the things of God

During lent We are also urged to think beyond ourselves and to do something that is good, that will help others.

In our parishes we always support different projects that make a difference

This year this year the focus of Bishops appeal is to support Waste Aid’s work in the Gambia. Waste management is still in its in infancy in Gambia and waste aid are working to educate people on the harmful effects of dumping and burning waste.

They are supporting an interesting project which converts plastic waste into paving tiles, these tiles do not require any cement or water in their manufacture.  The tiles are more durable than concrete and can be sold at a lower price and they create employment.

How can we help ?
