New Book,
Ballymacelligott and Ballyseedy Parishes
Next
month sees the publication of the History of the Parishes of Ballymacelligott, Ballyseedy, O’Brennan and Nohoval written in
1932 by R.C. priest Fr William Ferris but never previously published. The book
contains a wealth of genealogical and historical material relating to the
Protestant community in these parishes going back hundreds of years. Tralee man
Brendan McCarthy has spent five years editing and indexing the manuscript. The
website for the book www.ballymacelligott.com helpfully
contains a surname index so you can check to see if your family or ancestors
are mentioned. The price of the book is to be confirmed but will be circa €15.
St Patricks Day.
Members of The 1st Tralee Boy's Brigade
participated in the Tralee parade. The theme of their banner was to highlight the
danger to fish life from waste plastic in the oceans.
Rev
Phyllis and Rev Jim were present at the 9am Mass in Ballymullen barracks with
members of the reserve defence forces, at which shamrock was blessed. Jim
represented the parish on the stand to view the Tralee parade.

hoped to reschedule for September.
St. James Church, Dingle Restoration Project: Rev
Phyllis writes
Since coming to look after the
churches on the Peninsula, St. James has become very close to my heart. It is
an iconic church, reknown worldwide, much due to it
being the venue for 'Other Voices' over the past 16 or 17 years. It has been a
platform for a number of talented young people, many of whom have gone on to
become very successful and famous. Yet it still excites those who are chosen to
perform there to this day.
It is very much at the heart of
the Dingle Community and, throughout the year, plays a role in the many
festivals for which Dingle is famous. Visitors come especially to see the
church and hundreds of people experience the ambiance and spiritual presence of
this special place.
Which
leads me to say that first and foremost, St. James is a place of worship. It atttracts Pilgrims walking the Dingle Way, as well as its
pilgrimage links to Santiago de Compostella. Pilgrims
from Spain in Medieval times were thought to have been instrumental in building
the church and named it after their own St. James. In the following years, many
pilgrims set out from Dingle on spiritual journeys to Santiago de Compostella to follow the Way of St. James.
St.
James was rebuilt in 1808 and, like many old buildings, is in need of repair
and restoration – the cost of which will be in the region of €500,000. To
launch the fund-raising and to raise awareness of the project, on 1st May 2018,
I will be rekindling our links to St. James of Santiago, and walking the last
116km of the Camino in Spain. St. James Church, restored and improved, will
continue to serve God and the community into the next century. I am most
grateful for all the encouragment and support I have
received and, if you would like to sponsor me on my journey, please donate as
follows:

Outward Bound: Robert Hoffman from Annascaul and David Tough from Tralee, both members of
Tralee and Dingle Union of Parishes, are taking part in a Church Mission
Society Ireland (CMSI) team to visit Kenya in for two weeks in July this year.
CMSI
has been involved for many years in developing partnership links with the
Church in Kenya. The Team will help strengthen the link with Kajiado Diocese by engaging with ongoing ministries amongst
the local community. There will be opportunities to do building/repair work,
teaching/training of Lay Readers and craft training for women. The team will
also see first-hand some of the projects supported by link parishes (e.g. Oltiasika water tanks, farm and tractor, women’s
empowerment, Oloosuyian Girls Secondary School.)
Robert
and David are looking forward to their visit to Kenya and any support you can
give be much appreciated. On return we will be available to speak to interested
groups about our experiences in Kenya.
